WILLIAM WAS INVITED TO BE ONE OF THE 2,500 AMERICAN BOY SCOUTS TO ATTEND THE 5TH WORLD SCOUT JAMBOREE IN VOGELENZANG, BLOEMENDAAL, HOLLAND!
I don’t know how it was decided which of the 25,000 or so Boy Scouts who attended the 1937 Scout Jamboree in Washington, D.C. would be attending the 5th World Scout Jamboree in Holland. I was able to find out that to go to the World Scout Jamboree, they had to be invited, and in order to be invited they had to be the best-quality young men of their troops and their towns. Some were sponsored by the generosity of others.
Nowadays, they have to apply, and are chosen from the applications. They are currently taking applications for the 2023 World Scout Jamboree in South Korea. Boys must be from 14-17 years old at the time of the event.
Here is an article from an Australian newspaper (https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/11956945) about two boys from Victoria, Australia, that were chosen to go to the 1937 5th World Scout Jamboree:
Also, here are a couple of videos from the 5th World Scout Jamboree – Enjoy!
The site where Where the World Scout Jamboree was held is now a national park, the Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland (Kennemerland National Park).
The park was established in the 1950s. Here is a link about the park:
I’d like to encourage you to load all photos and documents that you’re interested in keeping to your own flash drive. If anything happens to me, this website and everything on it will eventually disappear.

Ivey Genealogy Information and Photos Scanned and Uploaded February 25, 2022 – 5th World Scout Jamboree (1937) in Holland!
The photos on William’s Scrapbook, page 5, are numbered from 129-160, and were taken during William Dixon Ivey’s trip to the 5th World Scout Jamboree in Vogelenzang, Bloemendaal, Holland.
129 through 135. On the way to the 5th World Scout Jamboree, which was held at Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland (Kennemerland National Park) in Holland.
I spent way too much time trying (unsuccessfully) to find out exactly where these locations were. The first few (129 through 131) are aerial photos, probably as they were approaching the airport in Holland. They may have flown into Haarlem, the closest city to the Jamboree site, or into Amsterdam, which was also nearby.
The photos after them (132 through 135) appear to have been taken on a boat.
136. Boy Scouts of America section at the 5th World Scout Jamboree
137 and 138 . American Boy Scouts at the 5th World Scout Jamboree.
I couldn’t identify William in either of these photos. If you think he’s in either one, please let me know and I’ll correct this.
139. Harry Reid
I only know this Navy man’s name because William typed it at the bottom of the photo. Wondering if this was Harry Reid the politician? Nope, that Harry Reid was born in 1939. I couldn’t find anything about this Harry Reid.
140. Green Bar Bill (right) and unidentified man.
I only knew that this was Green Bar Bill because William typed the name on photo 141.
141. Green Bar Bill (left) and Cruse Fuqua (right)
William typed their names on the bottom of this photo, so I did a google search for these two men.
Green Bar Bill was an important force in American Scouting, frequently compared to Lord Baden-Powell of England. Here are a couple of articles about him:
And here is another article:
Cruse Fuqua was another Boy Scout. He was from Texas, became a medical doctor, and continued to be active in Scouting. His obituary on findagrave.com even talks about how he traveled to Paris aboard the Normandy as a Boy Scout. Read it here –
142 and 143.
144. Boy Scouts from Scotland in Kilts.
Is the first kilted one playing a bagpipe?
145. William getting a haircut at the 5th World Scout Jamboree
He typed on the bottom of this photo “Haircut at the Jamboree”.
146 through 148. American Boy Scouts
149. I can’t tell what country these Boy Scouts are representing.
150. Boy Scouts from Palestine
151 through 155. International Boy Scouts
156. American flag at the World Scout Jamboree
157. Hiking trail at Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland?
158 through 160. Group photos – William Dixon Ivey is second from left in 159.
That’s all for today. Let me know what you think in the comments below. Thank you for reading!
